“He will not let your foot slip—he who watches over you will not slumber; indeed, he who watches over Israel will neither slumber nor sleep. The Lord watches over you—the Lord is your shade at your right hand; the sun will not harm you by day, nor the moon by night. The Lord will keep you from all harm—he will watch over your life; the Lord will watch over your coming and going both now and forevermore.” Psalm 121:3-8
What precious promises these are. The picture for me is of a parent carefully watching over a sick child through the wee hours of the night. Sometimes the demands of parenthood call for us to stand guard over our children. We watch to make sure the child is doing okay. We check their fever, listen to their breathing. We hover. But we as frail humans sometimes get so tired during our watchfulness that we fall asleep, we doze off, even if we are trying hard to stay awake in vigilance.
But the Lord never needs a nap. He doesn’t need forty winks to refresh Him. He stays awake through the watches of the night. He stands by during the day’s long hours. He watches when we are sick. He watches when we are well. And He doesn’t just keep watch, He protects. The Lord keeps us from the harms of the day and the terrors of the night.
Father, thank You for watching, protecting, guarding, keeping.
