Two very different words: gentle…harsh. These are certainly a dichotomy. They mean the opposite of each other. Today in Proverbs we see these two words to describe two reactions, two ways of answering. They also have two completely different results.
“A gentle answer turns away wrath, but a harsh word stirs up anger. The tongue of the wise adorns knowledge, but the mouth of the fool gushes folly. The eyes of the Lord are everywhere, keeping watch on the wicked and the good. The soothing tongue is a tree of life, but a perverse tongue crushes the spirit.” Proverbs 15:1-4
Our tongues can either help a situation or do damage to it. We get to choose. We can bring an adornment of knowledge or we can gush folly. We can sooth or crush.
The bottom line is we need to think before we speak. What do we want to be the result?
There is one true source of wisdom. That is God’s Word.
Can we share that in a situation that is escalating and do it in a gentle way? If we can, then that brings life and peace. If we cannot, maybe it would be better to not speak at all.
Lord, I want the words I share to bring life to others. Help me to speak Your words and do it in a very gentle way.
