“Sticks and stones may break my bones but words will never hurt me.” We’ve all heard it. We’ve maybe even all said it, but the truth is words do hurt. Our words can have an impact on people’s lives, sometimes for years. Families have been destroyed by harsh words. Churches have split because of words. Nations have gone to war over words. Relationships have been wrecked because of gossip or slander or bad-mouthing. Our words matter!
“With their mouths the godless destroy their neighbors, but through knowledge the righteous escape. When the righteous prosper, the city rejoices; when the wicked perish, there are shouts of joy. Through the blessing of the upright a city is exalted, but by the mouth of the wicked it is destroyed. Whoever derides their neighbor has no sense, but the one who has understanding holds their tongue. A gossip betrays a confidence, but a trustworthy person keeps a secret.” Proverbs 11:9-13
But words can also bring rest and peace to another person’s troubled heart. Soft-spoken words can stop an argument. Words of blessing can heal discord and animosity. Words spoken in prayer can change homes, cities, nations. The Words of the Gospel change lives.
Our words can draw people to the Lord: our words can also drive them away.
How do we want our words to be used? A blessing or a curse? The choice is ours.
Lord, let the words of my mouth be pleasing in Your sight.
