“Hear me, my God, as I voice my complaint; protect my life from the threat of the enemy. Hide me from the conspiracy of the wicked, from the plots of evildoers. They sharpen their tongues like swords and aim cruel words like deadly arrows.”
Words…they can be very powerful. A few words of encouragement can change a person’s direction. A few words of instruction can help someone redirect and refocus. A few simple words and phrases are powerful enough to help move a person away from the door of despair to the True Door, Jesus.
But words can also destroy. In this psalm David likens the way people speak to sharpened swords and deadly arrows. Words can be weapons of mass destruction.
What do we say to our children?
How do we address our spouse?
How do we speak to the people who wait on us at the restaurant or at the grocery store?
How do we talk to our co-workers?
How is our speech teaching those who overhear what we say? We need to remember that they will model us.
Are our words as cruel as deadly arrows? Or are they uplifting? Every day we get to decide how we speak.
Lord, please set a guard over my mouth. Help me to speak words that lead people to You.
