“A wise king winnows out the wicked; he drives the threshing wheel over them. The human spirit is the lamp of the Lord that sheds light on one’s inmost being. Love and faithfulness keep a king safe; through love his throne is made secure. The glory of young men is their strength, gray hair the splendor of the old. Blows and wounds scrub away evil, and beatings purge the inmost being.” Proverbs 20:26-30
Ah yes...gray hair. This text makes it sound highly desirable. And yet for many of us, we like to see it disappear under the careful workmanship of our beautician. But this calls it splendor...the splendor of the old.
Perhaps it’s because our culture prizes youth but has a tendency to reject the counsel of the elderly. God prizes both.
There is a lot in the book of Proverbs that goes against the way our world works. We would be wise to pay attention.
These verses today highlight wisdom, the human spirit, love and faithfulness, the strength of youth, the splendor of the old, and the way to purge evil. It’s a lot to think about. It’s a lot to weave into our lives, but incorporating what God says over what our world declares is always the way to go.
Lord, please help me to see life from Your perspective. Help me to live out Your Word.
