When we are sick what should we do?
Go to the doctor?
All good answers, but is there anything else?
David knew what else to do. He prayed.
“I said, ‘Have mercy on me, Lord; heal me, for I have sinned against you.’ My enemies say of me in malice, ‘When will he die and his name perish?’ When one of them comes to see me, he speaks falsely, while his heart gathers slander; then he goes out and spreads it around. All my enemies whisper together against me; they imagine the worst for me, saying, ‘A vile disease has afflicted him; he will never get up from the place where he lies.’” Psalm 41:4-8
David asked for God’s intervention because he knew some of his choices had led to his illness.
Can we say that too?
Perhaps our lifestyles do add to illness. Could we say that we eat too much, exercise too little, eat wrong things, are too sedentary? Could we possibly look back and remember life choices that put us in danger?
David knew that his choices had done just that so he went to the source, his own sin. He asked God to please forgive him. He then pleaded with the Lord to protect him from the slander of those around him.
David went to the One who could really help.
When we are ill, of course we should see a doctor, take medicine, and rest. But we should also pray because all healing comes from God.
If I am ill, Lord, help me to come to You. I need You to search my heart. I ask You to forgive my sinful choices when I make them. I come to You today and ask that You heal me.
