Take a tube of toothpaste and squeeze out all the contents. Once emptied, then try to put it all back. It’s impossible to restore it to its original state. What was inside is now outside and can never be returned.
Our words are like that. Once spoken, they are out there. Once said, they can’t be put back.
“Eloquent lips are unsuited to a godless fool—how much worse lying lips to a ruler! A bribe is seen as a charm by the one who gives it; they think success will come at every turn. Whoever would foster love covers over an offense, but whoever repeats the matter separates close friends. A rebuke impresses a discerning person more than a hundred lashes a fool.” Proverbs 17:7-10
The power of words…it is an amazing thing. Lying words can start feuds. Harsh words can open the doors to divorce. Venomous words can begin wars. Gossip can separate friends.
Once out, they can’t be returned. The genie is out of the bottle.
Psalm 141:3 says, “Set a guard over my mouth, LORD; keep watch over the door of my lips.”
Knowing the power of our words, this needs to be a constant prayer.
Lord, please guard what comes out of my mouth. Help me to say words that help and heal. It may at times be a rebuke, but help me always to speak in love.
