Turn the Other Cheek

“For I am about to fall, and my pain is ever with me. I confess my iniquity; I am troubled by my sin. Many have become my enemies without cause; those who hate me without reason are numerous. Those who repay my good with evil lodge accusations against me, though I seek only to do what is good.” Psalm 38:17-20

People who hate without reason, those who responded to David’s good with evil were many. He took responsibility for his sins and the consequences of his sins but then also had to face enemies who hated him without reason.

There was a lot of trouble in his life.

But then again, life can be filled with trouble.

Are there people in your life that just don’t like you?

Are you picking up the pieces from wrong choices that you’ve made or from wrong choices others have made that affect you?

Do you feel like things are coming against you?

Are there dark days and then darker days?

David recognized that as wrote this psalm but he made a choice. He chose to seek to do only what was good.

That is a big choice when people are after you. It is a big choice even when they’re not. But it is the calling God has given. We turn the other cheek. We bless instead of curse. We help instead of hurt.

It is a clear testimony that we have a different kind of heart. It’s one that belongs to the Lord.

Lord, help me to turn the other cheek, bless instead of curse, help instead of hurt, so people can see Your heart.
