I would tell my children that if they always tell the truth, people will always believe them. But it’s amazing how fast a lie can come out of our mouths. Whether it’s to cover up a sin, make ourselves look better than we are, exaggerate, hide something, or intentionally give the wrong information, a lie is a lie.
“Like a coating of silver dross on earthenware are fervent lips with an evil heart. Enemies disguise themselves with their lips, but in their hearts they harbor deceit. Though their speech is charming, do not believe them, for seven abominations fill their hearts. Their malice may be concealed by deception, but their wickedness will be exposed in the assembly. Whoever digs a pit will fall into it; if someone rolls a stone, it will roll back on them. A lying tongue hates those it hurts, and a flattering mouth works ruin.” Proverbs 26:23-28
Do you see? Lies hurt people. And in the end, they wind up hurting us.
Jesus, You are Truth. Help us to live lives that match up to Your Words. May the words of our mouths and the meditations of our hearts be acceptable in Your sight.
