What are our desires? What do we long for in the deep recesses of our hearts? Today, let’s take an assessment. Are we looking around the corner for gold and silver? Do we spend all our time chasing after the American dream of prosperity, abundant wealth, grand houses, luxury cars, and enough toys to satisfy our every whim? Are those the dreams we are pursuing?
Or are we longing for more intangible riches like joy and peace and love?
Will our hopes and longings ever be fulfilled? Proverbs addresses this with the knowledge that the answer actually lies with the desires that are in us. It all depends on whether we long for the righteous things in life that draw us close to the Lord, or if our hearts are pulled away from Him by the deceitfulness of wealth and the lure of the world.
“The desire of the righteous ends only in good, but the hope of the wicked only in wrath.” Proverbs 11:23
While it may not always seem like our desires are being fulfilled in the present, we do have the assurance that a grand payday is coming someday. Goodness awaits those who have the righteousness of Christ. Total fulfillment and complete satisfaction are in the future for those who pursue the Lord.
Jesus gave us this admonition in Matthew 6:19-21, “Do not store up for yourselves treasures on earth, where moths and vermin destroy, and where thieves break in and steal. But store up for yourselves treasures in heaven, where moths and vermin do not destroy, and where thieves do not break in and steal. For where your treasure is, there your heart will be also.”
Treasure on earth or treasure in heaven? The choice is ours.
Father, please help me to daily put my desires under the microscope of Your Word and long for the things that last.
