The Thief

A thief arrived at my house, an enemy who has come to rob my family. The stealing isn’t all at once. It is a gradual affair. At first most people won’t see that anything is missing. He will take just a little, not every day, but often enough that eventually everyone will notice the loss.

This thief has moved in to steal, destroy, and eventually kill.

Terminal illness. I am afraid because that’s my new reality. That’s the diagnosis.

I am very afraid.

These are words we might cry out or what we might feel when the doctor utters the words that any one of us, or a loved one could not be facing an incurable disease.

It’s awful. It’s frightening. It’s overwhelming. It is a terrible enemy.

And that is just one of the enemies we may face. Most of us don’t face foes on a battlefield. Our enemies come a bit more cloaked. Disease is one. There are so many others. Affairs, divorce, abuse, fatal accidents, I could go on and on because all are the adversaries that war against us.

King David knew enemies. He lived with enemies, but he also knew that the enemy he faced was fought not by him, but by God. And so, it is with us. What is the enemy or thief that we are facing? What giants are looming in our lives?

The place where we find rest and peace is in the Lord. God fights for us and God is the victor.

King David uttered this prayer during his lifetime. The same prayer is for us today when we walk onto life’s battlefield.

“Your hand will lay hold on all your enemies; your right hand will seize your foes. When you appear for battle, you will burn them up as in a blazing furnace. The Lord will swallow them up in his wrath, and his fire will consume them. You will destroy their descendants from the earth, their posterity from mankind. Though they plot evil against you and devise wicked schemes, they cannot succeed. You will make them turn their backs when you aim at them with drawn bow.”

Psalm 21:8-12

Thank You Lord that the enemies I face are not too big for You. You are my hope. I can find rest in Your left hand as Your right hand seizes and consumes the wicked schemes of my enemies.
