The Teacher

Think back over your school career. Who was the best teacher you ever had? Who was the worst? A teacher can make or break a school year. They can help us love or cause us to hate a subject. The instructor can make a world of difference. Boring, monotoned, way too strict, not in the least excited to be there, can all contribute to us wanting to run for the hills in the classroom. But a teacher who lives and breathes his or her subject with a passion and a desire for passing along that information can actually birth in us a hunger and thirst to know more.

When it comes to the Bible and studying and learning it, we have the best teacher available. Psalm 119:33-34, “Teach me, Lord, the way of your decrees, that I may follow it to the end. Give me understanding, so that I may keep your law and obey it with all my heart.”

God is right here every moment of every day to help us learn. We simply need to ask. He can and does give us insight and understanding. He opens our eyes to truth. Luke 24:45 tells us that Jesus opened the minds of the disciples so they could understand the Scripture. We can pray and ask Him to do that for us as well.

Of course, He also uses Bible teachers, authors, pastors, evangelists, rabbis, those whom He has called to rightly divide His Word. God wants us to hear and take to heart good Bible teaching. But every day we can come with the request of the Psalmist, “Teach me, Lord.”

And Father, that is the cry of my heart today, “Teach me, Lord!”
