“My heart is stirred by a noble theme as I recite my verses for the king; my tongue is the pen of a skillful writer. You are the most excellent of men and your lips have been anointed with grace, since God has blessed you forever. Gird your sword on your side, you mighty one; clothe yourself with splendor and majesty. In your majesty ride forth victoriously in the cause of truth, humility and justice; let your right hand achieve awesome deeds. Let your sharp arrows pierce the hearts of the king’s enemies; let the nations fall beneath your feet. Your throne, O God, will last for ever and ever; a scepter of justice will be the scepter of your kingdom. You love righteousness and hate wickedness; therefore God, your God, has set you above your companions by anointing you with the oil of joy. All your robes are fragrant with myrrh and aloes and cassia; from palaces adorned with ivory the music of the strings makes you glad.” Psalm 45:1-8
What causes your heart to be stirred? Do noble themes tug at your heart strings? When good overcomes evil or justice wins, do you find yourself thrilled with the beauty of it?
How about music? This psalm is being sung by a Levitical choir. When the music swells and the crescendo increases, do you discover that you are tapping your foot, or rising to dance, or that your voice is being lifted as well?
And if suddenly you find yourself in the presence of royalty or a dignitary, does your heart skip a beat?
And have you ever breathed in the power of a fragrance that seems to belong just short of this side of heaven?
What stirs our hearts?
Every day we have the privilege of entering the presence of the King of all Kings. We know He overcomes evil and that in the end justice will reign. And at any moment of any day we can link our voices with a heavenly choir that never ceases to worship. We can breathe in His sweetness.
Lord, thank You that I know You. Thank You that my heart can be stirred with music and praise and adoration and sweetness in Your presence.
