When I watch the evening news, I am often greatly disturbed by the terrible events that have erupted in our world in only a day’s time. Crime, sinfulness, man’s inhumanity toward man, awful activities, terrible actions grab the headlines. And it’s not only about one single offense, but about multiple offenses.
When Adam and Eve sinned, it changed not only them, but the world. The ground became an unforgiving place, thorns, thistles, weeds began to grow alongside crops and produce. Pain and suffering became mankind’s companion. Shame and separation from God became the order of the day. And death entered the world. Throughout all of human history all people have lived with the consequences of Adam’s and Eve’s sin. Thorns, pain, suffering, shame, separation from God, and death all linger for every living thing.
And it was because of one sin. Adam and Eve committed that first sin, but the price affected each one of us.
So, when I watch the news, or look around at our world, I have to wonder how much our world and the next generations will suffer because of all the sin that is happening every second of every day by millions upon millions of people.
I can identify with the psalmist, “Streams of tears flow from my eyes, for your law is not obeyed.” Psalm 119:136
But God in His loving grace did not leave us hopeless. We have a Savior who took the pain, the suffering, the guilt and shame, who wore the thorns as a crown, and paid the penalty of death with His own life.
Lord, when I watch the news I can feel overwhelmed by all the sin in the world. When I read Your Word, I see the victory over all the sin in the world. Thank You.
