“The Lord is my shepherd…” Psalm 23:1
Psalm 23…this most beloved psalm quiets our hearts. It gives us peace when we are troubled. It gives us hope when we are discouraged. It gives us direction when we are in darkness.
For the next few days we are going to examine this psalm looking at the text, but also looking at some of the names of God that are hidden within its words.
Our God is everything we need. We call Him Lord, Savior, Jesus but He has many names and each reflects a slightly different character that we can rest in.
So, let’s begin with the first phrase. The Lord is my shepherd. This is Yahweh Raah. A shepherd takes care of his sheep. He makes sure they have food, water, protection. He leads and guides them to where they need to be. Jesus identified Himself as the shepherd in John 10:11, “I am the good shepherd. The good shepherd lays down his life for the sheep.”
That is exactly what Jesus did. John 10 goes on to tell us that as sheep, we recognize the voice of the shepherd. He speaks; we can hear and obey. As we study His Word, we hear His voice clearer and more distinctly, because the Bible is Him speaking to us.
Listen, what is He saying today?
“Yahweh Raah, my Shepherd, help me to listen to Your voice. Help me to follow Your leading every day. Thank You for being my Good Shepherd.”
