The Gift of Sweets

Cookies, cupcakes, scones, cakes, pies…do I have your attention yet?

Brownies, fudge, candy canes, chocolates…how about now?

We love sweets, don’t we? And Christmas time? Well, it’s the best. Cookies look like works of art.

Cupcakes are dressed not only in icing but are overdressed in sprinkles and molded sugar decorations that look like elves, or stockings, or decorated trees. Pies are piled high with whipped cream toppings and colored frosting that looks like holly leaves and berries.

The sweet confections are all dressed up with some place to go, and our taste buds rejoice the moment we raise them to our lips.

Christmas is a time of joyous celebrations and sweets make it to every party. They are definitely gifts to be grateful for.

But why?

Perhaps our love of all things sweet is designed to be a reminder. This is what Psalm 19:8-10 says, “The precepts of the Lord are right, giving joy to the heart. The commands of the Lord are radiant, giving light to the eyes. The fear of the Lord is pure, enduring forever. The decrees of the Lord are firm, and all of them are righteous. They are more precious than gold, than much pure gold; they are sweeter than honey, than honey from the honeycomb.”

Have you ever eaten pure honey? It’s very, very sweet. But these verses say that the precepts of the Lord, His commands, are sweeter than honey. That’s interesting. Often, we think that God’s precepts are a little heavy.

But here is why God’s Word is so amazingly sweet.

John 1:1 says, “In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God.”

At this Christmas season, we need to realize Who that Word is. John 1:14 explains it. “The Word became flesh and made his dwelling among us. We have seen his glory, the glory of the one and only Son, who came from the Father, full of grace and truth.”

The Word of God, Jesus, became flesh and came in the form of a tiny baby, so we could know Him.

So, when the Bible says that God’s Words, His commands and precepts, are sweeter than honey, we can also know they are sweeter than cookies, chocolates, or cakes, because Jesus is the Word, the Word that came to dwell among men.

The next time you eat some deliciously sweet confection, remember that Jesus is the sweetest One of all.
