When we encounter headlines, often the ones we are reading about are the beautiful, the rich, the famous. People are captivated by the lives of those who are at the top of the beauty scale. But what does the Bible have to say about beauty?
In reality, not a lot.
Oh, there are a few mentioned in Scripture…Sarah, Rebekah, Rachel, Joseph, Saul, David, Absalom. They had physical attributes that were deemed good looking or unusual. But when it’s all said and done does our outside appearance really matter?
Isaiah 53 tells us that the Messiah would have nothing about His looks that would draw us to Him.
Proverbs 31 puts outside appearance in perspective. “Charm is deceptive, and beauty is fleeting; but a woman who fears the Lord is to be praised. Honor her for all that her hands have done, and let her works bring her praise at the city gate.” Proverbs 31:30-31
So, what does matter?
The answer: Are we someone who fears the Lord?
Again, here’s the question: Are we?
Heavenly Father, thank You for the amazing book of Proverbs. I have encountered wisdom again and again in its verses. Help me to value wisdom and apply it every day, because it comes from You. The fear of the Lord is the beginning of wisdom.
