Perhaps all of us struggle a bit with our significance in this life. Will we have made a difference? When the funeral goers walk away from the grave site will our names be forgotten? This section of the Psalms gives us a glimpse into our legacy. “Surely the righteous will never be shaken; they will be remembered forever. They will have no fear of bad news; their hearts are steadfast, trusting in the Lord. Their hearts are secure, they will have no fear; in the end they will look in triumph on their foes. They have freely scattered their gifts to the poor, their righteousness endures forever; their hornwill be lifted high in honor. The wicked will see and be vexed, they will gnash their teeth and waste away; the longings of the wicked will come to nothing.” Psalm 112:6-10
What a difference between the righteous and the unrighteous. The unrighteous will be vexed and waste away. The righteous will be remembered forever. But how can we be righteous? From personal experience, I can say with all confidence that it does not come from within ourselves. Our righteousness can only come from the One who is truly righteous. Jesus offers to cover our unworthiness with His worthiness, our filth with His cleanliness, our unrighteousness with His righteousness, our sin with His forgiveness. That is sure a good deal! We receive a garment that covers us over with Him and that will always be remembered.
Lord, You are so good, so perfect, so righteous and yet You take all of my worthlessness and cover it with Your worth. Thank You.
