“I will declare your name to my people; in the assembly I will praise you. You who fear the Lord, praise him! All you descendants of Jacob, honor him! Revere him, all you descendants of Israel! For he has not despised or scorned the suffering of the afflicted one; he has not hidden his face from him but has listened to his cry for help.” Psalm 22:22-24
The cries from the cross echoed but no answer came. The agony was endured for hours but finally Life took one last breath and death took over.
His body was taken down from that emplement of torture and wrapped in strips of cloth. He was hurriedly buried in a borrowed tomb, and a stone rolled and sealed against it.
The Romans, Pharisees, scribes, and teachers of the law who had called for His execution walked away convinced that they had ridded themselves of this One named Jesus. They left the burial grounds believing they had heard the last. But what they didn’t understand was that it was just the beginning. Death was about to be swallowed in victory.
The cry to end the torture went unanswered until death came but the cry to bring forgiveness has been answered for us all. Jesus was placed in the tomb but life was coming. The stone would be rolled away.
His life is available to us all. We simply need to believe.
Jesus, thank You for taking the torture, the punishment so that I don’t have to.
