There are so many voices in our world today. There is more noise and clamoring for our attention than at any time in history. Phones, computers, classes, IPADS, TV shows, news, movies, books, information, conversations, opinions, billboards, commercials...
Some of it is helpful but much of it is not.
So, we have a command in today’s verses that is easy to read but not as easy to apply. It tells us to guard our hearts.
“Above all else, guard your heart, for everything you do flows from it. Keep your mouth free of perversity; keep corrupt talk far from your lips. Let your eyes look straight ahead; fix your gaze directly before you. Give careful thought to the paths for your feet and be steadfast in all your ways. Do not turn to the right or the left; keep your foot from evil.” Proverbs 4:23-27
So how do we do that?
We pray. We ask the Lord to help us to filter, limit, convict, protect our hearts and minds. We flood our lives with His Word, and knowing it, makes understanding what is garbage and should be thrown out, clearer to recognize. He wants our hearts pure and protected. It means there are times to turn off the noise and listen to His still small voice. If we will listen when He whispers, it will keep us on the path before us.
Please help me not to look to the right or the left but rather to fix my eyes on You and listen to Your voice. I know when I do, You set a guard over my heart and bring protection to my life.
