“Whoever dwells in the shelter of the Most High will rest in the shadow of the Almighty. I will say of the LORD, ‘He is my refuge and my fortress, my God, in whom I trust.’ Surely he will save you from the fowler’s snare and from the deadly pestilence. He will cover you with his feathers, and under his wings you will find refuge; his faithfulness will be your shield and rampart. You will not fear the terror of night, nor the arrow that flies by day, nor the pestilence that stalks in the darkness, nor the plague that destroys at midday.” Psalm 91:1-6
It seems as if the writer of this psalm is living in 2020 during the COVID 19 outbreak. He speaks of pestilence and plague and reminds us of our real protection and safety.
We can let fear and uncertainty become the place where we dwell. It’s so easy to let our minds travel to unrest and sleeplessness due to enemies we cannot even see. But this psalm reminds us of our refuge, our fortress, our shelter amidst this storm.
The picture the psalmist painted was of a mother hen protecting her chicks. At the tiniest of threats, they run under her wings and she cares for them. When the biggest of threats stalk us, we can run to Him. And He gathers us under the safest place in all the universe, the shadow of the Almighty. Seek Him. Find Him. He offers rest and refuge.
Does this mean that we are immune from sickness, or difficulty, or challenges? No. But what is does mean is that God is right there with us.
Lord, how grateful I am that even though the circumstances in this life may seem mighty, You are Almighty.
