It is often quoted, “God is love.” That is absolutely true. But we must realize that there are things that God hates. In Malachi, it tells us that God hates divorce. It also says He hates a man covering himself with violence. And here in Proverbs we see more. “There are six things the Lord hates, seven that are detestable to him: haughty eyes, a lying tongue, hands that shed innocent blood, a heart that devises wicked schemes, feet that are quick to rush into evil, a false witness who pours out lies and a person who stirs up conflict in the community.”
Let’s number them:
1. Haughty eyes
2. Lying tongue
3. Hands that shed innocent blood
4. A heart that devises wicked schemes
5. Feet that are quick to rush into evil
6. A false witness who pours out lies
7. A person who stirs up conflict
Now let’s delve into these a bit more. Have we ever given a prideful look, acted superior, made ourselves look better than someone else? Have we ever told a lie? As far as shedding innocent blood, there are some things that our country has embraced that shed innocent blood. Have our hearts been involved in wickedness? So much that comes across our screens falls into that category. Have we participated? Have our feet taken us to places that are ungodly? We’ve already addressed telling a lie, but sometimes one lie precipitates a second and then a third. Have we been involved with that? And the final one is about stirring up conflict. This is so prevalent today. There is conflict at every turn. Have we jumped into the fray?
Have we ever been involved with any of these?
The answer most likely is yes. Because we all sin.
God loves us, but He does not love sin. He hates it. Our sin is what put Jesus on the cross.
But He died so we wouldn’t have to.
And that was the most amazing act of love ever.
Heavenly Father, yes You are love, but I also know that there are things that You hate. Keep me from those things. Help me to do what is right.
