We hear a lot of promises in our world today. Campaign promises, political promises, advertising promises for a product that doesn’t quite work as slick as advertised. Promises are not what they used to be.
Have we ever broken one of our promises? Perhaps what we absolutely thought we would be able to do, didn’t always play out into what we actually did do. So the promise never came to fruition. Remember when Peter told the Lord Jesus that he would lay down his life for the Savior? And then, only a few hours later he denied that he even knew Jesus. His promise flew right out the window as the rooster crowed.
Yes, we don’t always live up to what we say we will do.
But there are promises we can stake our lives on. We find them in God’s Word. And His promises are more secure than the rising of the sun. We never question when we get up if the sun will rise today. It simply comes up at the exact time it’s supposed to. The same is true of God’s Word. It is always fulfilled exactly as it’s supposed to be. It takes no effort on our part. It depends solely on the Lord.
The Psalmist prayed: “Fulfill your promise to your servant, so that you may be feared. Take away the disgrace I dread, for your laws are good. How I long for your precepts! In your righteousness preserve my life.” Psalm 119:38-40.
Our prayer can be the same.
Lord, fulfill Your promise to Your servant. Thank You that I can trust You, because Your law, Your Word, Your promises are good.
