Passing the Role

“Your sons will take the place of your fathers; you will make them princes throughout the land. I will perpetuate your memory through all generations; therefore the nations will praise you for ever and ever.”

Psalm 45:16-17

Life goes on. Sons step into the role of fathers. Then their children grow up to take their place. It’s how it works. None of us get to occupy this space forever. We live. We make our mark. We die. We leave a legacy. Perhaps we will be remembered for a generation, or perhaps we have left a broad enough name that we get remembered longer.

However, the length of time we get remembered hardly matters because this life is not about making a name for ourselves. Rather, our time spent here needs to be about making the name of the Lord known.

It is our privilege and honor to perpetuate His name, to help the nations praise and worship Him for ever and ever. And in so doing we can look forward to the day when He says our name with the words, “Well done, good and faithful servant.”

And the Lord never forgets our names. They are engraved on the palms of His hand.

Father, I want to make it my life’s mission to make Your name known.
