As a kid, I used to think about what I would do if I were granted three wishes. Of course, I thought I’d ask for a million dollars. That sounded like such a big amount that I would be set for life. In today’s economy, I’m not sure about that. My second wish might have been for a huge house. I shared a room with my three sisters. Yep, a room all to myself would have been great. I also planned to ask as my final wish for three more wishes. That way I could extend the whole “get anything I wanted” scenario.
Of course, there is no such thing, but as a child we dream. So, did you notice that all my wishes centered around me? I would have asked for what I wanted even doing my best to extend the self-centeredness.
In today’s passage from Psalm 37, we see a promise. “Do not fret because of those who are evil or be envious of those who do wrong; for like the grass they will soon wither, like green plants they will soon die away. Trust in the Lord and do good; dwell in the land and enjoy safe pasture. Take delight in the Lord, and he will give you the desires of your heart.” Psalm 37:1-4
Did you catch that? “He will give you the desires of your heart.”
Does this mean we can ask for anything and we’ll get it?
The answer is, “No.” God has placed a stipulation on getting the desires of our heart. It is that we delight in Him. As we spend time with Jesus and relish in His presence, He changes our desires from being “me centered” to being “Jesus centered.” We begin to ask what does He want?
God is not an ATM where we can go and get cash. He is not the granter of three wishes. He is GOD. He is our Lord and Savior and He knows what He wants for us. As we spend time with Him, our desires begin to line up with His and it is then that God can give us the desires of our hearts, because they are really His desires.
Lord, please help me to desire what You want for my life.
