The end of this psalm is terribly sad. God wanted a nation that would follow after Him with their whole hearts. He desired a people who would listen to Him and obey. But so often they did not. “But my people would not listen to me; Israel would not submit to me. So I gave them over to their stubborn hearts to follow their own devices. ‘If my people would only listen to me, if Israel would only follow my ways, how quickly I would subdue their enemies and turn my hand against their foes! Those who hate the Lord would cringe before him, and their punishment would last forever. But you would be fed with the finest of wheat; with honey from the rock I would satisfy you.’” Psalm 81:11-16
Blessings for obedience, consequences for disobedience, that’s what God offered. Why would this group of people not follow God? They had seen and experienced so many wondrous things. They had lived His deliverance, had heard His voice, seen His very presence descend in a cloud by day or fire by night. They had eaten bread from heaven.
Why would they not follow?
And yet, we have those same miracles recorded in our Bibles. We have both Old and New Testaments which give record of even more amazing events.
Why would we not follow?
Lord, please help me to read Your word and remember how marvelously You intervened on Israel’s behalf. Help me to see Your mighty hand in my life and follow You.
