Luke 13:22-30

You probably have some small doors in your home. They can be cupboards, a crawl space, attic or pantry. These small doors vary in size and shape but they share one common thread. They have to be entered the correct way.

You have to kneel to enter some. You have to bow down for some. You have to crawl to get into some.

Jesus told His disciples that there would be those who would try to enter a narrow door but would not be able.

“Then Jesus went through the towns and villages, teaching as he made his way to Jerusalem. Someone asked him, ‘Lord, are only a few people going to be saved?’ He said to them, ‘Make every effort to enter through the narrow door, because many, I tell you, will try to enter and will not be able to. Once the owner of the house gets up and closes the door, you will stand outside knocking and pleading, “Sir, open the door for us.” But he will answer, “I don’t know you or where you come from.” Then you will say, “We ate and drank with you, and you taught in our streets.” But he will reply, “I don’t know you or where you come from. Away from me, all you evildoers!” There will be weeping there, and gnashing of teeth, when you see Abraham, Isaac and Jacob and all the prophets in the kingdom of God, but you yourselves thrown out. People will come from east and west and north and south, and will take their places at the feast in the kingdom of God. Indeed there are those who are last who will be first, and first who will be last.’” Luke 13:22-30

Was it because they were not welcome or too wicked or they needed to get cleaned up?

None of those reasons was the problem.

Jesus came with the greatest love the world would ever know. There is not a person on the planet that is outside His reach.

Were they too wicked? There is not one sin ever committed that cannot be forgiven. Jesus died on the cross for sinners and every sin was completely destroyed the moment He breathed His last breath. He pronounced that it was finished, complete. The debt for every sin was paid. There is not a sin that can be thought, imagined or entered that cannot be forgiven.

Did they have to get cleaned up first? That wouldn’t work. There is nothing that can get us ready. It is impossible to get ourselves clean enough to come through the door.

So why?

You have to come the right way. For this door, there is only one way. Jesus Christ is the way. The book of Revelation tells us that Jesus stands at the door and knocks. We must open the door of our hearts and invite Him into our lives. His entrance into our lives is our entrance into His Kingdom.

It is so simple that many people try a different way. People try being good, helping others, cleaning up their lives. There is nothing wrong with any of those things. They are all good. But they are not the door. There is only one way in.

His name is Jesus.
