Today we begin Psalm 58. It was written by David and was intended to be sung. It even lets us know that the tune for the song was “Do not Destroy”, the same tune as Psalm 57. It seems this tune was a favorite of David’s. While we don’t know how that tune goes, we can see from the first five verses of this psalm that the song itself was a harsh indictment against wicked rulers. David compared them to venomous snakes. “Do you rulers indeed speak justly? Do you judge people with equity? No, in your heart you devise injustice, and your hands mete out violence on the earth.Even from birth the wicked go astray; from the womb they are wayward, spreading lies.Their venom is like the venom of a snake, like that of a cobra that has stopped its ears, that will not heed the tune of the charmer, however skillful the enchanter may be.” Psalm 58:1-5
As we look at our world we know that some of our rulers, our leaders, fall into this category. They promote an agenda that is clearly against God’s plan. They are against what is right and for what is wrong. Many are humanistic and self-aggrandizing rather that aligning with God’s Word and His plan for the world.
So, what can we do?
We may not be able to sing this to the same tune, but we can join David in his desire for this group to NOT destroy. We can join our hearts together to pray for our leaders, local, state, national, and global that their hearts will change and they will follow after God’s plan rather than their own.
Heavenly Father, today we want to lift up all of our leaders. Please touch their hearts and help them to see what they need to do to follow You and Your plan for our world.
