“Keep me as the apple of your eye; hide me in the shadow of your wings from the wicked who are out to destroy me, from my mortal enemies who surround me. They close up their callous hearts, and their mouths speak with arrogance. They have tracked me down, they now surround me, with eyes alert, to throw me to the ground. They are like a lion hungry for prey, like a fierce lion crouching in cover.” Psalm 17:8-12
The apple of God’s eye, what exactly is that? It seems that the phrase comes from the round pupil in the eye. It’s where light is allowed in and it’s the most protected place, with the lid closing instantly if danger approaches our eyes. If we are the apple of His eye then always we are in God’s sightline. We are also protected and covered. It is a safe place to be.
The wings are also safe and secure. Jesus looked over Jerusalem and with tears cried, “Jerusalem, Jerusalem, you who kill the prophets and stone those sent to you, how often I have longed to gather your children together, as a hen gathers her chicks under her wings, and you were not willing.” Matthew 23:37
David was willing to be covered by God’s wings. He realized that danger, the enemies, were like crouching lions just waiting to pounce. That is why he was asking God for that kind of safety.
We can too.
Heavenly Father, keep me always in Your sight and hide me under Your wings, Your outstretched arms. Thank You.
