Iron Sharpens Iron

Standing outside the neighbor’s house early in the morning and shouting blessings over them may not be perceived as a blessing. People don’t love being awakened even if the blaring words are sweet. We need to be respectful of others and bless them out loud when it is a better time or pray quietly for our friends and neighbors that God will pour out blessings on them. They don’t have to hear it for God to move.

We also need to pray diligently before we consider a spouse. Living with a quarrelsome person is not a blessing. If their bent is to always be fighting, that is challenging. It is a constant strain. It goes on and on. We need instead to ask the Lord to provide a mate for us that helps us be better, helps us to become more like Christ. We can sharpen each other. We can help to smooth out the rough edges in a kind and gentle way.

“If anyone loudly blesses their neighbor early in the morning, it will be taken as a curse. A quarrelsome wife is like the dripping of a leaky roof in a rainstorm; restraining her is like restraining the wind or grasping oil with the hand. As iron sharpens iron, so one person sharpens another.” Proverbs 27:14-17

Dear Jesus, lead me. Help me to do those things that are going to bless others and help me to sharpen those around me and please use them to sharpen me.
