Discipline…the word evokes lots of feelings.
Perhaps we remember times when our parents caught us in some discretion or major infraction. And then came the punishment. Of course, we fought against it. It was not designed to be pleasant. It was designed to sting enough in our memory that we never did whatever we had done, again.
Discipline was supposed to help us remember what was right to do.
The bottom line was, that if our parents loved us, they instructed us in the ways that were right. They blessed us when we chose well, and reminded us uncomfortably when we chose poorly.
Our Heavenly Father does that as well. He loves us. He loves us more than any earthly parent could ever love us. He is growing us up to be like Him and that sometimes includes discipline.
“My son, do not despise the Lord’s discipline, and do not resent his rebuke, because the Lord disciplines those he loves, as a father the son he delights in.” Proverbs 3:11-12
If we are part of God’s family, then we need to expect that when we do wrong, He will reign us in. He will do things in our lives that will sting enough in our memory to help us not repeat what we had done.
Father, I want to be part of Your family. Thank You that You treat me as a much-loved child and discipline and rebuke me when I am wrong.
