Forever

Psalm 136:1-26

“Give thanks to the Lord, for he is good. His love endures forever. Give thanks to the God of gods. His love endures forever. Give thanks to the Lord of lords: His love endures forever.

to him who alone does great wonders, His love endures forever. who by his understanding made the heavens, His love endures forever. who spread out the earth upon the waters, His love endures forever.

who made the great lights— His love endures forever. the sun to govern the day, His love endures forever. the moon and stars to govern the night; His love endures forever.

to him who struck down the firstborn of Egypt His love endures forever.

and brought Israel out from among them His love endures forever. with a mighty hand and outstretched arm; His love endures forever.

to him who divided the Red Sea asunder His love endures forever. and brought Israel through the midst of it, His love endures forever. but swept Pharaoh and his army into the Red Sea; His love endures forever.

to him who led his people through the wilderness; His love endures forever.

to him who struck down great kings, His love endures forever. and killed mighty kings— His love endures forever. Sihon king of the Amorites His love endures forever. and Og king of Bashan— His love endures forever.

and gave their land as an inheritance, His love endures forever.

an inheritance to his servant Israel. His love endures forever.

He remembered us in our low estate His love endures forever. and freed us from our enemies. His love endures forever. He gives food to every creature. His love endures forever.

Give thanks to the God of heaven. His love endures forever.

There is a profound message in this psalm that is next to impossible to miss. God’s love is eternal. His love will never end.

God’s great love is poured out through His creation. Can you see it when you look at a sunrise? Can you feel it when the sun comes to rest for the night? Does your throat catch when you look at the mountains? Does the mighty ocean fill your heart with praise? The lights in the heavens pour forth their praise. Do our lips when we look at them? Every bit of this beautiful earth shouts that a loving God crafted such magnificent beauty for each one of us.

And then, as if that wasn’t enough, we can see God’s mighty hand over the Israelites. They are living proof that God is, that He loves, that He cares for His people. He rescued Israel from Egypt. He walked them through the Red Sea. He sustained them in the wilderness with food and water. Then the Lord brought the Israelites into the lush Promised Land. God gave them their promised inheritance, not once, but twice. Today, Israel, once again, walks the land God promised to His servant Abraham.

But God’s love was never restricted to just Israel, that love and care is extended to each one of us. God has brought each of us, who come to Him, out of our slavery. He has freed everyone who trusts Jesus, the Savior, from the enemy. He has brought all of His followers into His Kingdom, a land that flows with the milk and honey of His Word.

Lest we forget, twenty-six times this psalm shouts a reminder to us of God’s great, eternal, everlasting love for each and every one of us. Today, walk in that love. Breathe it in. Smell it. Taste it. Hear it. See it. Feel it. Know that the God of all creation loves you!

Father, thank You for Your love that endures forever.
