“Be good to your servant while I live, that I may obey your word. Open my eyes that I may see wonderful things in your law. I am a stranger on earth; do not hide your commands from me. My soul is consumed with longing for your laws at all times.” Psalm 119:17-20
I heard once about an experiment with kids on a playground. When the children were put in a place with no boundaries, many of them huddled in the center. They didn’t know how far they could go; so they didn’t venture very far away from what was safe. Then a fence was added. The children knew that as long as they were inside of that fence they were safe. So, they could go right up to the very edge and stay within its confines. It gave them assurance.
God gave us laws for a reason. They are the fence around our lives to keep us safe within their confines. The law was never given as a punishment; rather it was given by God to keep us where we need to be. In reality, our hearts cry out for structure and direction even though we often fight against it. Obedience to God’s Word is the best way to live. This psalmist knew that and was asking for clear direction as he read and studied, because he truly wanted to live the way God wanted.
Lord, help me to follow Your law and look at it as a fence around my life to show me how to be safe.
