“Do not exploit the poor because they are poor and do not crush the needy in court, for the Lord will take up their case and will exact life for life. Do not make friends with a hot-tempered person, do not associate with one easily angered, or you may learn their ways and get yourself ensnared. Do not be one who shakes hands in pledge or puts up security for debts; if you lack the means to pay, your very bed will be snatched from under you. Do not move an ancient boundary stone set up by your ancestors.” Proverbs 22:22-28
Today’s passage is filled with many “do nots”. Do not exploit the poor. Do not crush the needy in court. Do not make friends with a hot-tempered person and more. In reality, the Bible does have many do not statements. So, why?
First of all, they are very concrete. We don’t have to wonder here about the message. It is very clear. There are things that God wants us to avoid.
Secondly, everything God gives us as law is there for our benefit. God tells us to be aware of the dangers that can hurt us. We tell our children often the things they should not do. God is being a loving parent by giving us His loving, “Do nots”.
Father, when I read something in Your Word that I should avoid or should not do, please help me to yield to Your loving commands.
