Discipline

The word discipline has come to mean punishment, but that is not really the heart of the word. What it actually means is a program to train. You lay out the expectations and provide the way to achieve the results.

We need discipline in sports. To become a world-class athlete, we train in every area, mentally, physically, emotionally, spiritually.

We need discipline to achieve work goals. Again, this affects all areas.

But we especially need discipline in our overall lives. We need to understand the rules on how life works and follow them. That means embracing the truth that there is right and wrong. It means recognizing that there must be consequences to choosing to go the wrong way. This is discipline.

It is a command in God’s Word that we discipline our children.

“Discipline your children, for in that there is hope; do not be a willing party to their death. A hot-tempered person must pay the penalty; rescue them, and you will have to do it again. Listen to advice and accept discipline, and at the end you will be counted among the wise. Many are the plans in a person’s heart, but it is the Lord’s purpose that prevails. What a person desires is unfailing love; better to be poor than a liar. The fear of the Lord leads to life; then one rests content, untouched by trouble. A sluggard buries his hand in the dish; he will not even bring it back to his mouth!” Proverbs 19:18-24

We lay out the goal, the plan to achieve it, and the rewards and consequences as we are working toward it. It is exactly what God did for us in His Word.

He has given us numerous rules, but when you come down to it, they can be summed up in two: Love God; love people.

A simple discipline but it is amazing how it works.

We thank You Lord that You have given us a guidebook called the Bible that lays out for us the discipline to become great in Your Kingdom. Help us to follow You.
