Today’s verses give us counsel for when we dine with a ruler. But let’s face it, not many of us are on the guest list at the palace. The queen has not sent a gold embossed invite for us to join her for tea.
So why are these verses in here? How do they relate to us?
First of all, never say that standing before royalty is an impossibility. We never know what doors will open and we will have a completely unexpected audience. We see in Scripture that the apostle Paul was summoned to appear before the leaders of the land. He wasn’t the only one. So, let’s not rule out the possibility.
But even if we never appear before what the world considers the elite, know that we will have opportunities over and over again in our lives to be in the presence of those in authority. These verses warn us to be careful.
“When you sit to dine with a ruler, note well what is before you, and put a knife to your throat if you are given to gluttony. Do not crave his delicacies, for that food is deceptive.”
So, what are the delicacies of a ruler? I think it could be anything that he has that you want. It could be anything that you are willing to give yourself the wrong license to go after.
Trust God. Ask Him to set your path. Be willing to work hard and do your best, but don’t go after the wrong things. Set your mind, your sight, your heart on what He wants for your life, and then follow that path.
Lord, thank You that we can trust You to take us on the path You want us to be on. We pray for strength to follow You.
