“They shoot from ambush at the innocent; they shoot suddenly, without fear. They encourage each other in evil plans, they talk about hiding their snares; they say, ‘Who will see it?’ They plot injustice and say, ‘We have devised a perfect plan!’ Surely the human mind and heart are cunning. But God will shoot them with his arrows; they will suddenly be struck down.” Psalm 64:4-7
Verse four is a continuation of the thought in verse three. David said that words are cruel like deadly arrows. Here he said that the speaker shoots those word-arrows from an ambush.
We need to be prepared. People say things that can wound us and sometimes those words seem to appear out of nowhere. Yet, we must remember that people speak out of the abundance of their hearts and we are told in the book of Jeremiah that the heart is deceitful and desperately wicked. Before people come to know Christ, their hearts are filled with evil. That’s what the Bible says. So, if the heart is filled with sin, what else can we expect? People are going to say words that hurt. But also in this section, it says that God will come to our aide. He will fight the battle for us. We don’t have to. We can trust that God is fighting the injustice of evil words for us.
Dear Jesus, people say things that hurt me. I am sometimes blindsided by their words. I bring my hurts and concerns to You.
