“The crucible for silver and the furnace for gold, but the Lord tests the heart. A wicked person listens to deceitful lips; a liar pays attention to a destructive tongue. Whoever mocks the poor shows contempt for their Maker; whoever gloats over disaster will not go unpunished.” Proverbs 17:3-5
We acknowledge that we are guilty for the sins we commit. We can look at our lives and it is obvious to us and often to others, the wrong things we have done. But God knows even what is in our hearts and minds. No one else can look and perceive all the thoughts running around inside our heads and aren’t we glad?
But even though we can hide from others what is in our minds, God does indeed know that our evil thoughts call for punishment. Even if we never act on our wicked thoughts, they are still wicked. The anger we hide from others, the lust that can consume our minds, the hatred we feel toward people, the pride we relish and think may be ours and ours alone, gloating over disasters, is also viewed by God. And this Proverb informs us that is will not go unpunished.
So, what can be done?
First of all, when we come to the Lord and ask for forgiveness, He forgives and He cleanses us. And then as we read the Scripture and fill our minds with His Words, God does renew our minds. It is a battle, but our God has already won the victory.
God, I know my mind is a battleground for evil thoughts to creep in like tiny arrows thrown my way, but You have already defeated the evil one. Thank You for the renewing of my mind.
