“My God, I cry out by day, but you do not answer, by night, but I find no rest. Yet you are enthroned as the Holy One; you are the one Israel praises. In you our ancestors put their trust; they trusted and you delivered them. To you they cried out and were saved; in you they trusted and were not put to shame.” Psalm 22:2-5
The crucifixion began at 9:00 in the morning and ended at 3:00 in the afternoon. It was the very moment when the shofar would have sounded throughout Jerusalem announcing the deaths of the lambs slain for the Passover sacrifice.
These verses from psalm 22 record the cries by day and the cries by night that go unanswered.
At noon Jesus was in the throes of death, having been beaten beyond recognition and then nailed to the cross. Matthew 27 records that a darkness covered the land for three hours. This was the heavens response to the death of their Creator. Night descended as the Light of the World was extinguished.
Jesus cried out in both the day and the night but no answer of comfort or relief came. Jesus felt the full weight of our sin and judgment, crucified at hell’s gate, His blood being shed to make our rescue possible. He met death in the day and death in the night.
But life was coming.
Lord, thank You that You bore all of that on the cross for me.
