Sin separated David from God. David had known the loveliness of God’s presence in his life. He had walked with God as he wrote the 23rdPsalm and knew what it meant to lie down in green pastures and have goodness and mercy follow him. He had experienced the joy of God’s salvation. But then he had listened to the cry of his flesh and acted. He had committed adultery and then murder. After Nathan’s confrontation, David came back to God and pleaded, “Create in me a pure heart, O God, and renew a steadfast spirit within me. Do not cast me from your presence or take your Holy Spirit from me.Restore to me the joy of your salvation and grant me a willing spirit, to sustain me.” Psalm 51:10-12
Our sin separates us from God as well. But we can be like David and go to the source of cleansing. We can ask the Lord to create is us a pure heart and restore our joy, the joy of salvation. We can ask to be renewed.
He did it for David. He will do it for us.
Dear Lord, create in me a pure heart and renew a right spirit in me.
