“He made known his ways to Moses, his deeds to the people of Israel: The Lord is compassionate and gracious, slow to anger, abounding in love. He will not always accuse, nor will he harbor his anger forever; he does not treat us as our sins deserve or repay us according to our iniquities. For as high as the heavens are above the earth, so great is his love for those who fear him; as far as the east is from the west, so far has he removed our transgressions from us.” Psalm 103:7-12
How often in my life have I gotten angry? How often have I blown up or said things I shouldn’t have, or lashed out because of my anger? How many times has my fuse been way too short? I’m afraid the answer is, way too many to count. But today as we read this psalm we see how gracious and long suffering the Lord is. He is slow to anger and, praise His Holy name, abounding in love and compassion and grace. His love is bigger than the vastness of the universe and He pours it out on us.
This is such good news, because we are sinful beings and the truth is all of our sin is against God. Every bit of it deserves His wrath and punishment, but He is loving and patient and forgiving. And then on top of that, He takes our sin off of us and removes it as far as the east is from the west.
Now I can’t quite wrap my mind around the fact that north and south can actually meet, but east and west never do. So, when God says He is removing our sin as far as the east is from the west, it means once He has forgiven it, it is gone. GONE! Never to be brought up again.
We have sinned against Him, we still sin against Him, but His love is greater than our sin. He forgives us. He removes our sin. He never brings it up again.
That, my friends, is a really good deal.
God, even though I can’t begin to wrap my mind around the bigness of your forgiveness, I can still thankfully receive it.
