“Do not withhold your mercy from me, Lord; may your love and faithfulness always protect me. For troubles without number surround me; my sins have overtaken me, and I cannot see. They are more than the hairs of my head, and my heart fails within me. Be pleased to save me, Lord; come quickly, Lord, to help me.” Psalm 40:11-13
This is how we can feel when we start to go down the sin road and honestly face who we are. Can you remember your first sin?
I’m pretty sure the answer to that is no because it most likely happened before you can remember. You weren’t very old at all before you started to demand your own way.
But most of us can look back at some choices when we were very young that we now recognize as sin. If we start from there and write a list, it won’t take too long to agree with David that our sins have overtaken us. Let’s be honest, we really do have more than the hairs of our heads.
And when we look at ourselves that way, we can feel pretty hopeless. David was saying that he was on the verge of heart failure because of it. It can be overwhelming to look at our lives through the sin mirror.
So, what did he do? He prayed and asked the Lord to save him. It was pretty simple.
It can be for us, too. As soon as we pray, the Lord comes quickly to do just that. He comes with His cleansing and makes us whiter than snow. The sins are gone.
No longer do they number more than the hairs of our heads. The number is zero.
I can be set free from my sin, Lord, and I want to thank You. There is no freedom like it. You wipe the slate clean and I’m free.
