“May the table set before them become a snare; may it become retribution anda trap. May their eyes be darkened so they cannot see, and their backs be bent forever. Pour out your wrath on them; let your fierce anger overtake them.May their place be deserted; let there be no one to dwell in their tents. For they persecute those you wound and talk about the pain of those you hurt. Charge them with crime upon crime; do not let them share in your salvation. May they be blotted out of the book of life and not be listed with the righteous.” Psalm 69:22-28
Today’s passage seems pretty harsh. David is petitioning God to bring wrath on the enemies. That’s an immediate punishment. “May they be blotted out of the book of life.” That’s an eternal punishment.
There are those who have so set their hearts against God that they only destroy. Biblical personalities like Ahab, Jezebel, Judas Iscariot, the Herods are examples. Historical people like Antiochus, Hitler, Mussolini, Stalin warred against God and His people. Are their names blotted out of the Book of Life? It is a terrible thought to face the punishment of an eternal hell and yet it is a reality. There is a real heaven and a real hell. We get to choose where we spend our eternal home. Choose wisely.
Lord Jesus, I want to spend eternity with You. Thank you so much for providing a way for my name to be written in the Lamb’s Book of Life.
