Let’s talk about the word “awesome.” What does it mean? Merriam Webster defines it as “inspiring awe”. Then awe is defined as “an emotion variously combining dread, veneration, and wonder that is inspired by authority or by the sacred or sublime.”
Awesome is a big word. Yet we use it frequently. If something good is on TV, we might say, “Awesome.” If one of our kids or grandkids passes a big test, we might say, “That’s awesome.” We describe clothing or a new car using that word.
But are they? Are TV programs, tests, or new cars truly awesome, or is that word something that should be used for a “bigger than big” description?
Here’s what Psalm 47 says:“Clap your hands, all you nations; shout to God with cries of joy. For the Lord Most High is awesome, the great King over all the earth. He subdued nations under us, peoples under our feet. He chose our inheritance for us, the pride of Jacob, whom he loved.” Psalm 47:1-4
The Lord Most High is awesome. He truly is worthy of that word.
There is no other who deserves to be described as awesome. He is the Great King over all the earth. He is over every earthly monarch, every CEO, every president, or ruler. He is above all nations and all people groups. He is God, ruler of the universe.
Awesome is the right word to describe Him. God is so awe inspiring and so big that we cannot comprehend who He truly is and yet, He wants to have a relationship with us.
He calls me by name.
He calls you by name as well.
Awesome God, thank You for being who You are and yet You want to know me. Thank You that You call me by name and want me to be Your child. I am humbled and so grateful.
