“He who finds a wife finds what is good and receives favor from the Lord. The poor plead for mercy, but the rich answer harshly. One who has unreliable friends soon comes to ruin, but there is a friend who sticks closer than a brother.” Proverbs 18:22-24
A good wife and a good friend, these are both something to cherish. But not everyone has a loving wonderful marriage. Many people today are single. If you have a wonderful marriage, thank the Lord for that amazing blessing and work hard to maintain the relationship. Remember that a marriage actually takes work. It can be fun work, but work nevertheless. It cannot be something that people enter into and then just hope it gets maintained.
Then for everyone, friendships can be enjoyed. And friendships also need to be maintained. Spending time working on common goals can be building in any relationship. The proverb here though comes with a warning. If we have unreliable friends, we can come to ruin.
We need to choose our friends carefully. We need to pray that our children and grandchildren choose their friends carefully.
As we read this, we can marvel that this proverb ends with a very special relationship. There is a friend who sticks closer than a brother.
There is only One. His name is Jesus. He can be our very best friend. He can be our eternal friend. No matter where we are in relationships here on earth, Jesus sticks closer than a brother.
Dear Jesus, thank You so much for being my forever friend. Not all of my relationships here have worked out. Some have been unreliable. But You are forever with me. I never have to doubt Your faithfulness.
