I came out of church one morning when I was about ten. I remember thinking that I looked especially cute that day in a new pink dress. The next thing I knew I was at the bottom of the dozen cement steps that stood between me and the car. Apparently, I had my head held in such a haughty position, I never even saw the first step. I wasn’t hurt physically, but my pride was hurt terribly...and needed to be. I had walked out of church that morning with a pretty haughty spirit. The Scripture text today spells out the consequence.
“How much better to get wisdom than gold, to get insight rather than silver! The highway of the upright avoids evil; those who guard their ways preserve their lives. Pride goes before destruction, a haughty spirit before a fall. Better to be lowly in spirit along with the oppressed than to share plunder with the proud. Whoever gives heed to instruction prospers, and blessed is the one who trusts in the Lord.” Proverbs 16:16-20
These verses line out what we want to go after, that is of true value, and what we want to avoid because it leads to our downfall.
So where are we today?
Looking for wisdom because it is more valuable that gold?
Listening to instruction from the Word because that will give us true prosperity?
Or do we have our heads held up so high thinking about all we’ve done that we’re missing the first step down the concrete stairs?
Please, Jesus, give us true vision to see what we have our eyes and our hearts set on. Is it eternal or is it for today? Is it to puff us up or is it to build Your Kingdom?
