“He has shown his people the power of his works, giving them the lands of other nations. The works of his hands are faithful and just; all his precepts are trustworthy. They are established for ever and ever, enacted in faithfulness and uprightness. He provided redemption for his people; he ordained his covenant forever—holy and awesome is his name.” Psalm 111:6-9
In this psalm, the name of the Lord is declared holy and awesome. I have to ask myself how much of the world declares His name like that today.
I hear His name mixed with all kinds of expletives, combined with jokes, used in commercials to sell products, to punctuate sentences, to be sworn falsely. God’s name is used in multiple ways but how often is it declared holy, set aside, and awesome.
It is what we declare today. The name of the Lord is beyond our understanding or appreciation. It is the name we can wrap around ourselves when we need comfort, support, strength, assurance. It is a name beyond any other name.
“Who, being in very nature God, did not consider equality with God something to be used to his own advantage; rather, he made himself nothing by taking the very nature of a servant, being made in human likeness. And being found in appearance as a man, he humbled himself by becoming obedient to death—even death on a cross! Therefore God exalted him to the highest place and gave him the name that is above every name, that at the name of Jesus every knee should bow, in heaven and on earth and under the earth, and every tongue acknowledge that Jesus Christ is Lord, to the glory of God the Father.” Philippians 2:6-11
Thank You, Jesus, that Your name is above every other name and yet even with a whisper as we speak it, You are listening.
