What career can I choose that will make lots of money?
How can I build up my 401K?
How can I invest to increase my wealth?
All are questions of the times we live in.
In the last century, it has become increasingly possible to experience what many have believed to be the American dream. A good job, a nice house, 2.5 kids, two cars, a college fund for the 2.5 kids, and a large nest egg so retirement comes with dignity.
And many have followed that plan.
So, is that good or is it bad?
Well, there is wisdom in planning for the future.
But when our thoughts for our own wealth consume us, when our goal is to make ourselves richer and richer, when we become the focus, we are way off target.
We have to understand that it is the Lord who gives us health to be able to work.
It is He who gives us talents and intellectual abilities to problem solve and succeed.
It is Jesus who gives us wisdom to negotiate amidst personalities of coworkers and bosses.
We must recognize that God alone is the owner, not us. We are stewards of what He allows us to manage.
We need therefore to honor Him.
“Honor the Lord with your wealth, with the firstfruits of all your crops; then your barns will be filled to overflowing, and your vats will brim over with new wine.” Proverbs 3:9-10
Honor the Lord with our wealth and it’s supposed to be with the first of all we receive.
We are to give to the Lord first. Our thoughts concerning money should revolve around Him.
Therefore, our question should not be, “How can I increase my wealth?” Rather it should be, “Lord, how can I increase Your kingdom?”
Father, I want to give You the firstfruits of all You have blessed me with. Guide me in knowing how I can best increase Your kingdom with the wealth that You have provided.
