We’ve heard stories about people who have accrued great debt. Perhaps they have gambled away their funds not realizing how deep a hole they have created. It’s a reality in our world that some have embezzled from their employers. Or maybe someone has used credit cards to excess and the debt has become a massive amount. There are many ways for us to get upside down when it comes to our finances.
The Word of God tells us what debt is like.
“The rich rule over the poor, and the borrower is slave to the lender. Whoever sows injustice reaps calamity, and the rod they wield in fury will be broken. The generous will themselves be blessed, for they share their food with the poor. Drive out the mocker, and out goes strife; quarrels and insults are ended. One who loves a pure heart and who speaks with grace will have the king for a friend.” Proverbs 22:7-11
When the borrower walks away with money jingling in his pocket, it may at first feel like freedom. It is not. The borrower becomes a slave. From that point on, every penny, every dime belongs to the lender until the debt is repaid.
But on the other hand, there is the beauty of generosity. When we share our wealth, when we hand out food to the poor, when we give rather than trying to receive, we become richer than kings, we are free to enjoy great blessings.
Father, help me to become a generous person, not only with my finances, but with love and good deeds.
